Call for Papers: Entangled Seascapes: More-than-Human Histories Across Oceanic Worlds

15-09-2025

We are pleased to share the Call for Papers for the international conference Entangled Seascapes: More-than-Human Histories Across Oceanic Worlds, which will be held at the Academia Belgica in Rome on 22–23 January 2026.

From the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean, from the South China Sea to Pacific and the Atlantic, this conference explores the sea as an active, more-than-human agent that shapes and is shaped by human and nonhuman actors. We invite papers that challenge dominant land-based narratives of civilisation, encounters, and sovereignties.

We welcome contributions from historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, human geographers, and other scholars whose research engages with seascapes, more-than-human approaches, and related theoretical frameworks.

Please submit your paper title and an abstract (approximately 350 words) to m.cobb@uwtsd.ac.uk and daniela.desimone@ugent.be by 15 September 2025

We would be grateful if you could circulate this Call for Papers among your networks.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts!
