WISER seeks to appoint a Researcher on a three year contract renewable for a further three years, or the funded term of the Trust Chair. Closing Date: 21st July 2023

WISER is the pre-eminent interdisciplinary humanities research institute on the African continent and one of the leading research institutes in the global South. The Standard Bank Chair in African Trust Infrastructures is a six year project examining the origins and institutional effects of digital identification and surveillance technologies currently under development in many African countries.

WISER invites suitably qualified persons to apply for the post of Researcher. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the research activities of the Trust Chair, including the advising of doctoral and post-doctoral fellows, the organisation of scholarly and public events, limited post-graduate teaching and the development of funding proposals related to the problems of trust.

 

Brief Description: The successful incumbent will report to the Chair and to WISER’s Director; conduct research of their own design; and manage, support and report on the researchers in the Trust Chair.

 

Key tasks:

  • Assist with the delivery of the project’s research agenda;
  • Publish, support and report on accredited research;
  • Assist with the development of WISER’s related funding proposals;
  • Develop and foster relationships with institutional funders;
  • Supervise and coordinate the project’s postgraduate students;
  • Perform general research administrative duties.

 

Requirements:

  • A doctorate in a Humanities or Social Sciences discipline from a well regarded university;
  • Evidence of published research excellence, including at least five single-authored, peer-reviewed papers in leading journals; or equivalent chapter and book publications;
  • Experience coordinating research projects and related public-facing events;
  • Record of supervising postgraduate students, at least at the Masters’ degree level.

 

Remuneration:  The salary will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate in the range of a R650,000 to R750,000 cost to company per annum.
